4. Board Member Responsibilities

Board members of the Scott G. Green Foundation are entrusted with advancing the organization’s mission, protecting its integrity, and strengthening its community impact. Each Board member plays a vital role in ensuring that the Foundation remains a credible, effective, and values-driven force for historic preservation, cultural education, and civic empowerment.

Serving on the Board is both an honor and a commitment. Members are expected to bring their time, talent, resources, and networks to the table. While professional expertise is valuable, so too is lived experience, passion for preservation, and dedication to equity and truth-telling in our shared history. Board members should lead by example—modeling community-centered leadership and demonstrating consistent support for the Foundation’s goals.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Attend meetings regularly (minimum: quarterly): Active participation in scheduled meetings is essential for effective governance and collective decision-making. Members are expected to come prepared, engage in discussions, and fulfill any follow-up responsibilities.

  • Participate actively on at least one committee: Board committees drive much of the Foundation’s work forward. Whether in finance, programming, development, governance, or outreach, every member is asked to lend their insight and skills where most needed.

  • Make an annual financial contribution at a level personally meaningful: Every Board member is expected to give annually. While there is no fixed amount, each gift—large or small—demonstrates personal commitment and helps the Foundation achieve 100% Board participation, an important indicator for funders and grant makers.

  • Support fundraising efforts through outreach, event participation, and donor engagement: Members help open doors to funding opportunities, make introductions, and support the Foundation’s events and campaigns. This may include inviting guests to events, helping secure sponsors, or writing thank-you notes to donors.

  • Advocate publicly for the Foundation and its mission: Board members serve as ambassadors of the Foundation in their personal, professional, and civic circles. This includes sharing the mission, elevating the Foundation’s visibility, and representing the organization with pride and credibility.

  • Review and approve major initiatives, budgets, and reports: Members provide oversight and input on key organizational decisions, ensuring that resources are aligned with the mission and that programs and policies are thoughtfully designed and implemented.

  • Uphold confidentiality and act in the Foundation’s best interest: Board members are entrusted with sensitive information and must maintain discretion and integrity at all times. They must put the Foundation’s mission and values above personal or professional interests.
