10. Orientation and  Education

A well-informed and engaged Board is essential to the success of the Scott G. Green Foundation. To equip Board members for effective governance and meaningful contribution, the Foundation provides structured onboarding and opportunities for ongoing learning.

New Board Member Orientation

All new Board members will receive a comprehensive orientation designed to introduce them to the Foundation’s mission, operations, and governance responsibilities. The goal is to ensure that every new member understands the organization's values, strategic priorities, and their individual and collective role in advancing its mission.

The orientation includes:

  • Orientation Materials Packet: A binder or digital folder that includes the Foundation’s mission statement, bylaws, strategic plan, recent financial statements, Board policies, and committee descriptions.

  • Welcome Briefing with the Executive Director: An informal yet informative session that offers insight into the day-to-day operations, key initiatives, current challenges, and opportunities.

  • Access to Organizational Records: Including past Board meeting minutes, approved budgets, program reports, and foundational documents to help members build institutional knowledge.

  • Mentorship (Optional): New members may be paired with a more experienced Board member for peer support during their first year.

Ongoing Education and Development

The Foundation believes in continuous growth—not only for the communities it serves but also for its leaders. Board members will be encouraged to take advantage of ongoing education opportunities that deepen their understanding of preservation work, nonprofit governance, and community engagement.

These opportunities may include:

  • Workshops and Webinars on nonprofit leadership, fundraising, or cultural heritage

  • Historic Site Tours and community visits to experience firsthand the places and stories the Foundation works to preserve

  • Preservation Training Sessions, especially for members serving on the Historic Preservation and Projects Committee

  • Guest Speaker Presentations at Board meetings, featuring experts in education, equity, architecture, or history

  • Board Retreats for long-term planning, team building, and mission alignment

By investing in Board development, the Foundation strengthens its leadership capacity, fosters accountability, and ensures that Board members are empowered to make informed decisions that honor the past and shape the future.
