3. Role of the Board

The Board of Directors serves as the governing body of the Scott G. Green Foundation and plays a vital role in setting the course for the organization’s success and sustainability. As stewards of the mission, the Board provides strategic leadership, ensures transparency and accountability, and champions the values and vision of the Foundation in the broader community.

By overseeing governance, policy, and financial health, the Board safeguards the Foundation’s long-term impact. Its members bring professional expertise, lived experience, and community connections that strengthen the organization’s capacity to preserve Black heritage in Arkansas. In collaboration with the Executive Director, the Board guides the Foundation’s growth, upholds its public trust, and advocates for preservation, education, and cultural equity.

Board members are not only decision-makers but also active ambassadors—raising awareness, opening doors for partnerships, and leveraging their influence to promote the Foundation’s work. Their leadership is essential to aligning the organization’s daily efforts with its broader mission to preserve the past, protect the legacy, and power the future.

Key Duties:

  • Set organizational vision and strategy: Shape and periodically review the Foundation’s mission, vision, and multi-year strategic plan to ensure long-term alignment with community needs and impact goals.

  • Oversee and support executive leadership: Hire, evaluate, and collaborate with the Executive Director; provide mentorship, accountability, and encouragement.

  • Ensure financial integrity and sustainability: Approve budgets, monitor financial statements, participate in audits, and assist in fundraising strategy to ensure responsible stewardship of all resources.

  • Approve annual budgets, policies, and major programs: Vote on foundational decisions including financial plans, bylaws, major initiatives, staff structure, and policy updates.

  • Evaluate and monitor impact: Regularly assess the Foundation’s progress toward its mission through outcome data, staff reports, community feedback, and strategic benchmarks.

Through thoughtful governance and active engagement, the Board ensures that the Scott G. Green Foundation remains resilient, mission-driven, and responsive to the communities it serves.
